Familiar by the Cashier

Take of the change you wish
To see in the world, and ask me:
Is it love, or just indifference?
Do you remember: your weakness
Is the reason you look sullen but
Permissive, why acceptance is
The instinct face to face with
Feeling small. You are measured
For the first time in this age,
And you’re a titan –
But there’s something in your
Smile that’s all-encompassing,
Suggesting nothing could be
Made to make it real. We’re in
The middle of the lives we’ve
Both abandoned, muscles
We keep touching with a
Needle as they tighten
And we bite down on the
Finger or the flesh. This
Is fighting. And by knowing
What it is that we’re surviving
It seems anything is bearable,
For once.
